GIS

Description

GIS systems (Geographic Information Systems) give the possibility to preview, analyze, store and manage digital geo-referenced information.

Their applicability is horizontal and can be used in various sectors: Public administration, Water and gas management, Security, Civil protection, Mobility and Ecommerce. In each sector, GIS systems can bring an added value giving the possibility to understand and manage data related to an interpretation of the territory (i.e. address of the customers, location of goods, service map, geological maps, hydro geological maps, project maps, etc.).

Thanks to their geographical component, the information can be sited with high precision on the area, making it easily identifiable and accessible as on a standard map.

Main characteristics

GIS system is constantly evolving also thanks to the architectures linked to SOA services. In the past, GIS systems could be compared to an archipelago of small, efficient islands replicating large amounts of resources. Today we have standards that allow us to have bridges linking those islands and creating Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI).

Benefits

  • Access to geographical information in a transparent, simple, immediate and effective way
  • Integrate data, even very specialised one, to a map
  • Overall improvement of efficiency, with the ability to graphically display updated information coming from different entities
  • Ability to perform detailed analysis and planning data and observing their development on the maps; i.e. analysis of the exploitation of a territory and the distribution of resources
  • Information tracking
  • Ability to share information with users who have specialised knowledge and who wish to have geo-referenced information.
